Polish nativity cribs Poland’s Museum of History, in Krakow, celebrates Christmas with a competition for the most beautifully designed szopka. These ornate, often multi-story nativity cribs, topped by towers representing Krakow’s architecture, go on show from the first Thursday of December until February. No matter how elaborate, however, these nativity scenes still focus on the stable and the blessed child.
The cribs will be unveiled on Dec 1 at Krakow’s main square, Rynek Glowny, after the noon bugle call from St. Mary’s Church tower. Afterwards, they will be moved to the museum for judging. The contest, interrupted during the Polish-Soviet War in 1920, was re-established in 1937 and has been organized by the Museum of History since 1945. For more information, e-mail it@infokrakow.pl.
